Internet Filters

A range of home internet filters are available. The College is not is a position to recommend specific products. We advise parents to investigate options relevant to their family circumstance. We encourage all families to make use of web filtering at home due to the potential access to explicit and extreme materials that are available online.

Internet filters provide a way to secure an internet connection and prevent access to restricted web sites. When someone tries to access a web page, the request first goes through the filter. It is then checked against a list of websites that are blocked. If the site is not on this list, the page is displayed to the user. If the websites is on the list, the website is blocked and cannot be accessed. We strongly encourage all families to make use of web filtering at home due to the potential access to explicit and extreme materials that are available online.

Please Note: Although filters constantly use powerful algorithms and searches to work out, update and block inappropriate sites, on occasions inappropriate sites may be still be accessed and viewed. The nature of the internet, (new sites created each day, sites changing names etc.) means that blocking every inappropriate site is very difficult to achieve, therefore the best filtering system is parent supervision.

It is also important to check that your filter is working regularly, as power failures, internet distruptions etc. can cause the filter system to fail without warning.

How it Works

At the College, if a student wishes to access the internet, a request is sent through our internet filter. The filter determines if the content should be made available to the user.

At home, without a filter none of this occurs.  When a user accesses the internet, the page is simply displayed.

Restricted mode for YouTube

Whilst at the College, we have enabled a "Restricted" mode for all of YouTube. This mode works in a similar way to Google SafeSearch, where restricted content is filtered out by YouTube; as a result there may be some changes to how you interact with YouTube.
Please Note, Although filters constantly use powerful algorithms to work out, update and block inappropriate videos, on occasions inappropriate videos may be still be viewed. The nature of the internet, means that blocking every inappropriate video is very difficult to achieve, therefore the best filtering system is parent supervision.

At the College

By default, whilst at the College all search results are restricted when you access YouTube.
  • Students will always see restricted search results when they are not signed in with their B0 number at the College.
  • Teacher approved videos are only available when students have signed in with their Redlands College B0 number.

At Home

At home, if your child is signed into YouTube with their College B0 number all search results are restricted and teacher approved videos are available.

Restricted YouTube access can be turned off at home by selecting not to use a Google account. When using YouTube without a Google Account your child will have access to all of YouTube, unrestricted at home.
