What is an Apple ID?

According to Apple - "An Apple ID is your user name for everything you do with Apple: Shop the iTunes Store, enable iCloud on all your devices, buy from the Apple Online Store, make a reservation at an Apple Retail Store, access the Apple Support website, and more."

Apple's terms and conditions state that users must be 13 years of age or older to have a personal Apple ID.  This means that prior to 13 years of age, the Apple ID associated with a child's iPad is the parents'/guardians' AppleID for that device, and not the student's. Consequently, we ask parents/guardians of children under the age of 13 to create and manage their child's Apple ID. Parents can decide whether to continue to manage their child's Apple ID once he/she turns 13 years of age.

I use my private email address. Can I change it to my College email address?

Yes, you can!

  • Firstly visit this site.
  • Select "Manage your Apple ID"
  • Sign in using your Apple ID email address and password
  • Select "Edit" beside your Apple ID and Primary Email Address.
  • Enter your College email address
  • Select "Save Changes" at the Botttom of the screen
  • Select "Add Email address" located at the bottom the the page.
  • Add your old email address to this area. This will serve as a backup should you ever forget your new email address.
  • Save the changes again and sign out.

You now need to change the Apple ID being used on any device which was using the old Apple ID.

I share my Apple ID with most of the family. Is this OK?

Whilst you may be able to do this, we discourage it. The reason for this is that we have seen problems with iCloud when users share these details. One user may delete a file which another user has created. We therefore recommend that each user has their own account to keep it as simple as possible.

If I keep my Apple ID's seperate, how do I sync them on a single computer?

This information is covered in Step 2. Using Multiple iPads in the home.
