Focus: Coding in Maths

Year 7 Maths students have been studying the classification of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Joel's interest in coding and how it could be used in the classroom to extend and engage student learning came to fruition with his Year 7 Maths students. Using the app Tynker, students were asked to create and code a series of questions to assist in the understanding and classification of shapes. This was done to extend the students understanding and to also make the the classification of triangles and quadrilaterals enjoyable and engaging.

The students were set the challenge to create these questions with minimal teacher assistance. Initially, the students struggled with the coding, but by the second lesson they were busily working as a group, tutoring and supporting each other.

Students were then asked to share their program with other students, having them answer a number of questions to find the shape's correct name.

At first, the students, struggled a bit. Joel The students enjoyed being able to use coding to learn about the classification of shapes and enjoyed the chance to work with their peers to do this.
